Punch pizza was founded in 2008 by John and Maria Soranno, who fell in love with Neapolitan pizza during a trip through southern Italy. Inspired by centuries-old traditions, they brought that passion home to Minneapolis — opening a small, intimate pizzeria on East Hennepin Avenue.

From day one, our philosophy has been simple: use the finest ingredients, honor the craft, and serve each guest with genuine warmth. We source our San Marzano tomatoes directly from the volcanic slopes of Mount Vesuvius, our fresh mozzarella arrives daily, and our dough is hand-stretched using a recipe perfected over decades.

Today, Punch pizza is recognized as one of the Twin Cities' most beloved dining destinations — but our heart remains the same as it did on opening day: a deep reverence for great pizza and great hospitality.

2008 — The Beginning

Grand Opening on East Hennepin

John and Maria Soranno open the very first Punch pizza location at 210 E Hennepin Ave with just 12 tables and a dream to bring authentic Neapolitan pizza to Minneapolis.

2011 — Recognition

Best Pizza in Minneapolis Award

Minnesota Monthly magazine names Punch pizza the Best Pizza in Minneapolis, putting us on the map as a must-visit culinary destination in the Twin Cities.

2014 — Growth

Kitchen Expansion & New Menu

We expanded our kitchen, added a dedicated pasta section, and launched a seasonal menu program featuring locally sourced toppings from Minnesota farms.

2017 — Certification

VPN Certification Achieved

Punch pizza receives official Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN) certification — joining an elite group of pizzerias worldwide recognized for true Neapolitan authenticity.

2020 — Community

Punch Gives Back Program

During challenging times, we launched our community initiative — donating over 5,000 meals to Minneapolis food banks and healthcare workers throughout the year.
